A CHAMBER of Commerce leader has described the collapse of a popular menswear shop as good for business.
Berkhamsted chairman Ron Cowie spoke out during the local branch’s annual general meeting.
He said: “We were very sorry to see the Birtchnells building collapse.
“But it was good to see the amount of visitors taking photos and having coffee, tee and food in our restaurants and cafes.”
“The recession certainly hit business on and off the high street, but fortunately there have not been too many business closures in our town.”
The meeting, held last Wednesday, also included a talk by Treasury minister and South West Herts MP David Gauke.
Birtchnells, which was based in the town’s High Street, collapsed in the middle of the night in late January. No one was injured.
The cause is still unknown.
