A builder has lost his appeal to keep two semis built in Berkhamsted’s Bank Mill without adequate planning permission.

Philip Cowman, of Hempstead Lane, Potten End, will now have about six months to make their roof more in keeping with neighbouring homes.

This website previously reported that the Planning Inspectorate’s decision could mean he has to pull down the two houses and completely rebuild them – but this now looks unlikely.

The decision by Dacorum Borough Council to reject a retrospective planning application for the work Mr Cowman had done was taken against the advice of the authority’s own officers.

At the time, councillors said they didn’t want to send ‘the wrong message’ to developers who flout planning laws

Councillor Fiona Macdonald had said: “I have no sympathy whatsoever.”
