Be prepared, we’re going to meet a Bear!

World-famous explorer Bear Grylls will be finding his way around Hertfordshire on Sunday – and there will be plenty of people to help him get his bearings.

Bear is also the current chief scout, heading up the scouting movement across the country.

And during a whistlestop tour on Sunday he will be meeting young members aged between six and 25 and their adult leaders.

And he’ll also be encouraging more adults to join the volunteer ranks to help cope with a surge in membership.

Membership of scout groups in Herts is growing at its fastest rate for more than 20 years and there are no no fewer than 16,463 youngsters in the ranks – but more want to join, and a lack of leaders is holding some groups back.

The VIP visitor is mounting a ‘Bear In The Air’ helicopter tour which will take in visits to an air activities camp and the Harpenden Scouts gang show before heading to the Phasels Wood centre on the outskirts of Kings Langley where more than 3.000 scouts and leaders will be taking part in a multi-activity day.
