The designer of one of the world’s most successful aircraft ejector seats has died at the age of 71.
Dennis Newman spent all his working life as a designer with Martin-Baker of Denham, the world’s longest-established manufacturer of ejection systems.
A jazz enthusiast, Mr Newman was membership secretary of Berkhamsted Jazz Club for 15 years.
He donated his body to medical science and left instructions for a jazz concert featuring his favourite performers to be held in his memory, in lieu of a traditional funeral.
Long time friend Dennis Walker described Mr Newman as “a person who would do anything for anybody”.
“The jazz club is thriving, largely because of his efforts,” he said.
His widow Joan described her husband as “a kind-hearted man who would talk to anybody”.
