The curtain went up last night on Tring Festival Company’s summer production – and what’s not to love about a musical gem with an impeccable pedigree?
She Loves Me has the same tried and tested source as the Hollywood hit You’ve Got Mail, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
But this version of the love story involving two shop workers who can’t stand the sight of each other during the day, and then fall in love as anonymous pen pals at night, has a string of showstopping songs from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, who also came up with the hummable hits that made Fiddler on the Roof such a smash.
It’s set in the 1930s but it’s as fresh as a daisy, combining memorable music with witty and engaging dialogue. The cast features new faces as well as many who will be familiar from recent productions such as West Side Story and Calendar Girls.
