BERKHAMSTED Castle is one step closer to hosting open air theatre shows.

At a Berkhamsted Town Council meeting, members agreed to put £4,000 into the project, which will see 400 tickets made available to see The Pirates of Penzance this September.

Three more shows could be staged at the site next year.

Councillor Peter Matthews, a co-organiser, said it has taken three years for plans to get this far.

He said: “There were many fetes and other social events held in the castle for years and quite a few residents of Berkahsmted will remember what it was like.”

Councillor Garrick Stevens said: “I welcome this - the castle grounds have been sadly missed.”

The site has not been used for events since the 1990s.
