Once Dacorum Youth Productions had been selected to take part in Billy Youth 2011, Joley and I were invited to the Victoria Palace Theatre to meet with the creative team of Billy and to take part in a workshop with the other successful group leaders.

Spending the day with us were Nick Evans the associate director, Lee Proud the resident choreographer, and Mark Collins the assistant musical director. After exchanging introductions, we chatted with Liam Mower and Layton Williams who’ve both previously played Billy, as well as Connor Lawson who was making his debut as Michael the very next night.

Connor was invited to audition for the role of Michael after the creative team saw him perform with his youth group as part of Billy Youth 2010.

The boys talked about their different routes into dance, and the commitment and training required.

Lee Proud then asked for some volunteers to work with him in a dance workshop using the song Solidarity.

Joley and I were up on the stage, wearing police hats and brandishing batons quick as a flash, and what ensued was a fantastic opportunity to jump around on the set of Billy, and devise, rehearse and perform our routine.

The day finished off with a chat to the creative team and other groups involved in the Billy Youth 2011 project about our ideas and vision, and we were also given the opportunity to ask the million questions we had.

It was a fantastic experience, and now that casting is complete, we’re looking forward to starting rehearsals on Thursday, February 10.

Performance dates are Wednesday, June 1 to Friday, June 3 at the Old Town Hall Theatre, Hemel and Wednesday, June 15 to Friday, June 17 and the Court Theatre, Tring.
