BERKHAMSTED Music Society presents the Coull Quartet at the Civic Centre next Saturday.
Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Warwick since 1977, they’ve performed and broadcast extensively throughout the UK and the rest of the world.
They’re also regular visitors to Berkhamsted and are welcomed back warmly with their new violist Rose Redgrave.
Currently recording for Somm Records, their recent disc of quartets by Maw and Britten has received universal acclaim. In addition to being featured in Editor’s Choice in The Gramophone, it was also described as the ‘Benchmark Recording’ by BBC Music Magazine.
They were recently awarded a New Music 20x12 commission with composer Joe Cutler to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Ping! will be scored for string quartet and table tennis players, and will feature a soundtrack and video installation in collaboration with the video artist Tom Dale.
New Music 20x12 is a UK wide programme consisting of 20 outstanding new works, each lasting 12 minutes, commissioned to feature centre stage in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
The Coull Quartet play Haydn’s Quartet in F min. Op. 20 No.5, Tippett’s Quartet No. 1 and Schubert’s Quartet in G maj. Op. 161 at the Berkhamsted Civic Centre on Saturday, March 12, 8pm.
