James is really paying his dues

It used to be a staple of the successful stand-up’s CV – a bit of an outsider, started telling jokes to keep the playground bullies at bay, drifted into comedy as a career because they weren’t able to earn a living doing anything else.

So where does that leave a successful male model and TV hunk who wants to branch out into something new?

Ask James Redmond, who will be headlining at Hemel Hempstead’s Funny Roundabout Comedy Club next Friday, April 5.

You certainly won’t be able to accuse him of playing at his new career – the former Hollyoaks and Casualty star has been honing his dry and subtle set six nights a week since he changed his career path. That adds up to something like 350 gigs under his belt already, including spots at the Comedy Store and other iconic venues.

He still dabbles with telly, and you may have seen him in celebrity editions of shows as diverse as Total Wipeout, Mastermind and Come Dine With Me in recent years.

Also on the bill at Boxmoor Cricket Club from 8pm will be much-travelled John Pendal and performance poet Oh Standfast, among others.

Tickets are only £5 in advance, visit www.ticketweb.co.uk to find out more.

If you leave it until the night, expect to pay £10 on the door.
