It’s curtain up tonight for Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company’s latest production, but if you’re planning to pop along to the Boxmoor Playhouse you ought to know that the language can get a bit earthy, and the show is not really suitable for anyone under 14.
When Humble Boy by Charlotte Jones was first performed at London’s National Theatre in 2001 it starred Diana Rigg, Simon Russell Beale and Marcia Warren and went on to win a string of awards.
It’s increasingly becoming a favourite choice for ambitious amateur companies who are attracted by the simple staging and the dark comedy influences of Shakespeare, Stoppard and Ayckbourn.
It’s already been tackled in Dacorum, with the Little Gaddesden Drama Club performing it last spring.
The show runs through until Saturday, with performances at 7.45pm.
