If your preference is for feelgood comedy that sends you home with a warm and fuzzy feeling, look away now – Andrew Lawrence doesn’t take any prisoners.
In recent years he’s been developing a persona of despairing but resigned misanthropy on the live circuit, with the occasional TV slot to help him spread his name.
The title of his latest show doesn’t leave punters in any illusion about the dark nature of what’s in store.
Lawrence, who featured on last summer’s Tringe comedy festival bill with a ‘work in progress’ gig at Aylesbury’s Limelight Theatre alongside eventual Edinburgh queen of comedy Bridget Christie, is coming back to the town proper next month.
There Is No Escape takes the cheery premise that sometimes life is so awful that it would be better to vanish off the face of the earth and never be found. It might not sound like a bundle of laughs but Lawrence has built himself a name as one of the most intense and inventive performers in the business.
He’s at the Court Theatre on Friday, February 28 at 8pm. Tickets are £15 from 07543 560478 or www.courttheatre.co.uk.
To continue the upbeat theme, the comedian who coaxed Stephen Fry to go public about his suicide bid is also on his way to Tring.
Evergreen veteran Richard Herring, whose interview podcasts have become essential listening for all keen followers of the comedy scene, will be bringing his latest show, We’re All Going To Die, to the same venue in a few weeks. His gig on Thursday, March 13 is also £15.
To lighten the mood, a string of star names have been lined up to feature in the second Berkomedy Festival, which kicks off at the beginning of March.
The Greene Room in Berkhamsted’s Kings Arms will host double bills almost daily until March 20, and a passport deal provides 14 nights of top comedy for just £65.
Opening the programme will be Romesh Ranganathan and Angela Barnes from Channel 4’s Stand Up For The Week and other names to feature include familiar TV and radio performers NickHelm, whose sitcom Uncle has just made its debut on BBC3, Lucy Porter, Nathon Caton and Carl Donnelly, as well as many more.
