Youngster Matthew Riley set a new personal best as he beat some of the top young British divers to take fourth place in the platform competition at the Gstar Grand Prix event.
Longdean School Year 7 pupil Matthew took part in the competition which saw divers from levels 3 to 5 battling it out – with the top six competitors in the preliminaries going through to the finals.
Matthew came fifth in the prelims of the 3m competition and sixth in the final as he achieved new personal bests in both rounds despite being the only level 3 diver in the final.
The talented youngster then came 10th in the prelims of the 1m competition, but even if he had achieved his previous personal best he would only have been placed ninth due to the high standard of competition.
Next up was the platform competition, where Matthew came fifth in the prelims with a personal best of 40 points higher than his previous score.
Again, he was the only level 3 diver in the final and finished in an excellent fourth place – even managing to beat two children who are currently on the British Talent Squad.
Matthew has recently been selected to be a part of the Beacon Squad where he trains every Sunday in Luton with nine other children from the Eastern region.
