Four pupils from Tring School did their classmates proud at the English Schools Swimming Championships in Crystal Palace.

Competing against traditionally strong swimming schools including Millfield, Plymouth College and Kelly College, the Tring team of Harry Maishman, Luke Scales, Rob Jennings and Sam Murcott fought hard to secure top-15 placings in their two events.

The quartet, who train with Tring Swimming Club and Maxwell, went into the championships having done brilliantly to qualify for the intermediate boys’ 200m medley team event and the 200m freestyle team race.

The first event they swam in was the 200m medley relay where they qualified 15th before bagging 12th place overall -–making up three places and shaving 0.015 seconds off their qualifying time.

The boys had a long wait between their races where they absorbed the atmosphere and watched some inspiring performances, from athletes such as Ruta Meilutyte – the Lithuanian star who won a gold medal at London 2012 aged just 15.

In their final race of the day, the 200m freestyle relay, the Tring boys qualified 13th but dropped one place to finish 14th overall.

Tring School’s Joanna Botwright said: “This was a great achievement by all four boys and one we hope will inspire them in their training and competitions going forward.
