Keen athletes have just days left to snap up one of the last five charity places allocated to the Hospice of St Francis in this year’s Great North Run.

For a highly sought-after place in the world’s biggest half marathon anyone interested should contact the charity directly.

Dad-of-five Gary Illingworth, of Fields End, Hemel Hempstead, is already running the 13.1-mile race on Sunday, September 15, joining 56,000 people in Britain’s biggest mass-participation event.

Gary, 55, who has completed the race six times before, said: “During my mum Irene’s last few days, the care and attention that the hospice gave her, myself and my sister, Tracy, was nothing short of unbelievable.

“To think this is predominantly funded by donations is incredible.

“This is my small way of giving something back so that others can have the same experience during very emotional times.

To find out more about taking part call the hospice fundraising team on 01442 869555. Registration for the event cost £40.
