Glamorgan Gladiators 77 Hemel Storm 80

HEMEL Storm are through to the semi-finals of the Patrons Cup after a last-minute victory in a bruising encounter in the Rhondda Valley

The victory guarantees cup holders Hemel a spot in the final four, regardless of the result of their last pool game.

After a bright opening quarter in which Storm took a 26-17 lead, the side collapsed in the second period as the Gladiators’ physical man-to-man marking handed them a 47- 37 advantage at the break.

Storm regrouped at half-time, though, and scored the first three baskets of the third period before eventually reducing the deficit to just three points at 61-58 going into the final quarter.

But with Storm’s Michael Darlow, top-scorer Andy Harper, and captain Simon Kearney all disqualified under the five fouls rule, things looked bleak for Hemel going into the last 90 seconds trailing 77-74.

The side, though, dug deep to secure an unlikely win to the delight of head coach Dave Titmuss.

“We showed tremendous character and some intelligent play in the end-game to get this hard-fought win,” he said.
