Tring 41-20 Luton

William Mateai bagged a debut hat-trick as a young Tring side swept to victory over Luton.

In a promising sign of things to come, a total of five tries were scored by Tring players under the age of 21.

Three wins from four games this month has seen Tring climb to third place in the table, and the manner of the Luton victory will ensure the side is high on confidence for their next match – away at Civil Service.

Luton started the game brightly in Saturday’s encounter and took the lead through a converted Karl Roddell try, but Tring hit back with a try of their own from Ben Criddle, as well as a Liam Chennells penalty.

Luton, though, continued to press and regained the lead courtesy of a Christopher Snelling score.

In a fast-paced and end-to-end encounter, Tring were the next side to add to the try tally as Mateai touched down. Liam Chennells added the extras.

And hosts Tring extended their lead shortly after half-time as Tom Newton crashed over the line.

That sparked a Luton fightback, though, and the away side soon reduced the deficit to just two points courtesy of a Jake Harris penalty and a second try from Snelling.

With 15 minutes of the game remaining, the result was still in the balance – but Tring turned on the style to make sure of the win.

First, Chennels went over, before Mateai completed his hat-trick with two late efforts.
