Two teams of 13 runners from the Dacorum & Tring AC Road Runners took on the Adidas TR24 Thunder Run and notched up 440km between them over a 24-hour period.
Jamie Marlow, Steve Russell, Paul Stocker, Simon Bright and Steve Shaw were entered in the five-man relay category and completed 22 laps of the 10km hilly, technical course at Catton Woods in Derbyshire, while the eight-person mixed team of Natalie Black, Jessica Tanner, Rupinder Mahil, Clare Murray, Catherine Davies, Ken Perry, Barry Davies and Alex Dean also competed 22 laps.
Fully 2,700 runners competed in the race, which began in hot sunshine at noon on Saturday.
Eight hours later, the clouds rolled in and the teams had to battle through thunder, lightning and torrential rain, running continuously through the night as conditions became increasingly treacherous, with ankle-deep mud over most of the course.
Dacorum & Tring’s teams were among a select group that ran without taking a break over the 24-hour period, through to noon on Sunday when the sun broke through to end the weekend on a high note.
Notable performances came from Marlow who ran six laps, and Russell who completed five laps – more than twice as far as he’s ever run since taking up the sport in January.
Dacorum & Tring AC Road Runners serves Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and surrounding communities and welcomes recreational and competitive runners of all abilities.
