Ivinghoe Golf Club members Chris James and Russell Shardlow have progressed to the sixth round of the Daily Mail National Foursomes – the largest-entry amateur golf competition in the world.
It is a step into the unknown for the pair who, last year, exited the competition after the fifth round.
This time around, Russell and Chris – playing off 9 and 14 respectively – held on tenaciously in the face of a fierce fight-back by strong opponents from Letchworth Golf Club to win by a 2 and 1 margin.
Their latest victory takes the Ivinghoe pair into the final 64 of the nationwide competition, which begins with more than 190,000 golfers competing for the honour of representing their own golf club.
Russell said: “We were pushed to the limits by the lads from Letchworth, who played some very fine golf between them.
“At the end of the day, perhaps home advantage became the deciding factor, with Chris and I being more familiar with some of the more challenging pin positions.
“But it was a great tussle and could have gone either way, right to the very end.”
Playing partner Chris added: “We can’t wait for the draw for the next round now.
“I don’t really care who we play against, but a home draw would be very welcome indeed at this stage!”
