Tomorrow’s top golfers are following in the footsteps of stars such as Luke Donald, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood and Sandy Lyle by competing in the prestigious Berkhamsted Trophy competition.

The Trophy, in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz Hemel Hempstead Used Cars, is the first major UK amateur golf tournament of the year.

It will be played over 36 holes on Saturday, April 5 at Berkhamsted Golf Club, and 66 of the country’s top amateur golfers will be battling it out for the title.

During their early careers, Donald, Lyle and Walker Cup captain Peter McEvoy were all Berkhamsted Trophy champions, while Rose and Westwood narrowly missed out.

Kurt Gunthardt, general manager of Mercedes-Benz, said: “We very much look forward to working with Berkhamsted Golf Club for the second year running.

“Mercedes-Benz Hemel Hempstead Used Cars is keen to support our community, and the 2014 Berkhamsted Trophy is a key event within our calendar.”

Berkhamsted Golf Club captain Dave Smith added: “We are very proud that Mercedes-Benz became involved in the Trophy and look forward to a long and mutually rewarding partnership.

“This is the 55th year of the Berkhamsted Trophy; every year we think the standard of play can’t get any better and every year we’re wrong.”
