The Hertfordshire Warriors Basketball Club U18 girls made history by securing the club’s first England Basketball Junior National Championship.

The Warriors, who are captained by Hemel Hempstead School pupil Francesca Quinn, travelled to Sheffield for the England Basketball National Final Fours after an outstanding season which included a regional league championship title.

The girls faced a tough task in their first match of the day, against Bury Blue Devils, but they produced a solid display to earn the win to set up a clash against the much-fancied Sevenoaks Suns in the final.

After a very poor first quarter saw them trailing 11-19, the Hertfordshire girls were always playing catch-up in the final.

With five minutes to go, the Suns were still six points ahead, but the Warrior girls suddenly came to life with a stunning run of 20 points to five to snatch the title.

Hertfordshire coach Tony Marmo said: “The team really deserves what they have achieved.

“Every player in the team did us proud as they really had to dig deep to come back in the final and achieve this result.

“It has been an amazing day for the club and its very vocal supporters.”

The MVP award for the final went to Hertfordshire’s Vicky Gray.
