THE Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Taekwon-do clubs have come away from the discipline’s largest UK tournament with an impressive medal haul.

The group bagged five golds, two silvers and five bronzes at the prestigious British Taekwon-do Championships in Reading.

Dave Gurney – 2nd Dan instructor at Hemel – claimed gold for destruction, while Sandie Gurney was crowned patterns champion, and Alan Ceglarek, Craig Lowe and Nicola Barke took golds in sparring.

Silvers went to Lee Ellis in sparring and Barke in patterns, while Gurney, Brandon Bordoley, Ceglarek and Thomas Stokes all scooped bronzes. Darren Hobbs, meanwhile, was promoted to 2nd degree black-belt.

Tom Brennan, 4th degree Berkhamsted instructor, said he was delighted by the squad’s achievements – and he singled out destruction world champion Gurney for individual praise.

“I am very pleased that my student (Gurney) has gone on to become an excellent instructor and in turn, has produced students of such a high calibre himself.

“Not all students will go on to become champion competitors, but each will progress and grow through their training and increased knowledge.

“This will help them to become more confident, courteous and valued members of society.”
