Seven sixth form girls from Berkhamsted School have been chosen to represent the U19 England lacrosse squad.

Beating off competition from around 300 players, Lizzie Apthorp, Freya Burgess, Emma Oakley, Erica Wood, Beth Highfield, Zoe Thursz and Rebecca Jordache were among 60 players selected at the first U19 Team England Women’s Open Trials.

The trials were the first step towards the introduction of England Lacrosse Association’s new talent development system. The girls were tested on fitness, stick skills, tactical understanding and coach-ability, as well as competitive match play.

Berkhamsted’s lacrosse head coach Jo Lupton said: “This new set up of the U19 squad will build towards the next U19 World Championships to be held in Edinburgh in 2015.”

The first match of the season will see England take on Princeton University on Saturday, November 3 2012 at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, and Oakley has been selected to captain the side.

The Berkhamsted School first XII lacrosse team, meanwhile, have been crowned Hertfordshire county champions.

The girls won all of their group matches without conceding a goal, before seeing off St Albans High School 3-2 after extra-time in a thrilling final.

The 2nd XII also did well, finishing third.
