Berkhamsted Golf Club head coaching professional John Clarke was victorious at the Hertfordshire Open Championship held at West Herts Golf Club.

The Championship started in 2011, and this year is the only time since then that the tournament has been won by a professional rather than an amateur golfer.

Clarke was the only competitor who shot under par for the 36 holes when he scored a -1 total of 143.

Clarke said: “I’m really proud to be the first professional to win this championship but the past years have shown the high standard of amateur golf in the county – something for which the Hertfordshire Golf Union should be congratulated.”

Clarke joined Berkhamsted Golf Club in 1988 as a cadet, winning the Club Championship three times and taking over as head professional in 1993.

When he is not competing in tournaments, Clarke oversees the Golf Academy at Berkhamsted Golf Club which welcomes both members and non-members for group and individual lessons.
