When Camelot U12s accepted an invitation to participate in the Hertfordshire Mini’s Floodlit Festival, it was an opportunity too good to turn down.
The youngsters were playing under the lights on a good quality first team pitch, pitting wits against some of the best young players in the area – in by far some of the coldest conditions of the year so far.
Thankfully, for much of the evening the cold weather could be forgotten as players, coaches and parents alike became engrossed in a well organised event that featured some top quality rugby and fantastic displays of team spirit.
Against their toughest opposition of the season so far, the Camelot team battled through the cold night undefeated – drawing their first match 0-0 against the tournament favourites, and eventual winners, OA’s.
Camelot then recorded further draws against Woodford and Bishops’ Stortford, before the run of draws came to an end in the final match of the night as Camelot beat hosts Hertford with a late try by Ollie Mitchell.
Coach Les Long summed the evening up by saying: “The standard of our play in all four games was the best we have seen for quite some time.
“Undefeated on the night, the effort and team spirit was first class – the players were a credit to themselves, their parents and Camelot Rugby Club.”
Camelot U12’ are always on the look out for more Year 7 players to join the team, with training on some Friday evenings and training or home matches on a Sunday morning at Camelot Rugby Club in Chaulden Lane.
