An improved week saw several good performances from the Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club sides, with the result of the day coming from the young men’s fifth XI who despatched a West Herts side in impressive style.
Berkhamsted I 3 Shefford & Sandy 4
The Berko men’s first XI, however, fell to their third consecutive defeat of the campaign.
The home side took the lead when captain Pete Allam slammed a short corner into the bottom right of the goal, but they soon found themselves 3-1 behind.
Berko were the stronger side in the second half, dragging the score back to 3-2 with another Allam short corner strike, but Shefford restored their two-goal lead.
Despite Allam completing his hat trick , a harsh yellow card for Jason Silver spelled the end for Berkhamsted’s hopes of a draw.
Berkhamsted Ladies I 2 Shefford and Sandy III 2
The ladies’ first team, meanwhile, opened this season’s Division Two campaign with a hard-fought draw.
Berko started well and scored an opening goal from Claire Barrett-Mold.
A defensive lapse allowed Shefford to bag an equaliser, but Steph Vere-Hodge restored the Berko lead.
The opposition came out fighting in the second half and, despite some good Berko breaks, it was Shefford who scored a well-worked penalty corner to snatch a draw.
Berkhamsted III 3 MBDA 3
With a mixture of youth and experience, the Men’s IIIs came up against a very physical MBDA team who were going to be hard to beat.
Berko kept their cool, however, and ground out a deserved draw.
Berkhamsted IV 3 Blueharts 5
The Berkhamsted 4th XI started their game against a strong Blueharts side in a rather lacklustre style and quickly found themselves two goals down.
When Blueharts added a third goal after 15 minutes it looked like it was going to be a torrid afternoon for Berkhamsted but, early in the second, half Ed Goodwyn made a strong run from midfield, played a one-two with Brian de Mattos and flicked the ball past the keeper.
Blueharts responded to restore the margin and were then rather lucky when an unfortunate own-goal put them 5-1 up.
Berko kept going, though, and goals from Andy Prentice and Richard Korn narrowed the deficit.
Berkhamsted V 8 West Herts 1
After a slow start last week, the fifth XI pulled out a crushing win against an experienced West Herts side.
Berko took the lead after six minutes, and efforts from Oli Johnson and Ben Moorhouse gave the hosts a 3-1 lead at half-time.
The second half was all one-way traffic, and four further goals from Moorhouse, as well as one from Dom Peachey, ensured the match finished 8-1 to Berko.
