Berkhamsted bowls pairing are on a roll

A BERKHAMSTED duo have made it through to the finals of the Hertfordshire County Pairs competition.

Anne Furlong and Jackie Cormack beat off competition from 135 other pairs and will now represent Herts at the National Championships.

Meanwhile, Mary Miller, Anne Cutting and Mary Clarke have reached the 4th round of the W&D Triples.

In the club’s friendly against Chalfont St Giles, top rink Derek Simpson, Jane Low and Wally Dunn helped Berko to win 90-62.

In the Watford & District League, Tring pulled off a 31-26 win over Potten End to move up to second place.

The club lost 37-33 to Harperbury in the Griffin Cup, but bounced back with a 78-74 friendly win over St Albans. Top rink went to Linda McGuiness, Bob Kerry, Derek Adams and Ken Woodward.

Tring also hosted a ladies’ match between Watford and District and Croydon and District.

Watford triumphed, with Tring’s Gill Watson and Jill Mooring playing well.

Elsewhere, Kings Langley recorded one win and four defeats this week.

The men picked up a 58-51 win at Herts club, with Dave Connett, Dick Tolley, Richard Rigarlsford and Alex Beard impressing for Kings.

The club, however, lost a ladies’ match away at St Albans, before going down 64-49 to Oxhey in the men’s league.

They were defeated 89-66 by Met Police, and suffered an agonising one-shot loss at the hands of Harperbury.

Kitcheners’ Steve Delderfield, meanwhile, made it a hat-trick of semi-finals as he and partner Michael Connell defeated clubmates Brian Rumph and Dave Collins in the quarters of the Watford and District Pairs.

Delderfield is also in the semis of the Two Woods Triples and Champion of Champions tournaments.

In other fixtures, Kitcheners picked up one win and one loss.

The club were beaten 78-60 at Harpenden, but made up for it with a 73-48 victory over BP.

Roy Phipps, Phil Johnson and Debbie Whiting were top rink.

Hemel pairing Brenda Bennitt and Val Nash have progressed to the next round of the District Pairs, and Val Nash and Brian Smith have gone through the fourth round of the National Pairs.

Elsewhere, top rink Ken Emmins, Lorna Raynolds, Shiela Pell and Lena Emmins helped Hemel to a 76-71 win over Linslade in a mixed match, while the club’s Gents beat the Ladies in a friendly.
