Didcot delight for Bury

Bury Judo Club youngsters won medals at competitions in Southend and Didcot.

Bury Judo Club youngsters won medals at competitions in Southend and Didcot.

Youngsters from Bury Judo Club travelled to Didcot in Oxfordshire to compete in the White Horse Judo Championships – returning home with a hatful of medals.

The 14 Bury competitors scooped 13 medals between them, winning four golds, four silvers and five bronzes.

The gold medal winners were Jayden Duberry, Donovan Allen, Haydn Williams and Melissa Morrell, while Beth Curran, Nial Curran, Alfie Holmes and Alex Gill bagged silvers.

Adding to the impressive medal tally were Logan Read, Dylan Hirst, Mya Klyen, Ralph Williams and Jack Banford, who all won bronzes.

Following on from the club’s White Horse successes, nine Bury representatives took to the road again for the Southend International Judo Championships.

This was a two-day event with a host of overseas clubs competing, and Bury impressed again to secure three silver medals and two bronzes.

Tristan Randolph, Banford and James Hammond-Clay were the silver-medallists, while Beth Curran and Ben Atkinson fought hard to win bronze.

Bury’s senior club coach Roy Smith said: “This was valuable experience at a very high level which will help with further development.

“Hopefully these events have been a good warm-up for the next event, The British Judo Council Closed Nationals on November 18 in Hereford.”
