Men deliver first class win

James Barron scored a hat-trick for the Berkhamsted men's first team against Welwyn Garden City.

The Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club men’s first team led the way this week with an exciting 4-3 victory over Welwyn Garden City.

Berko made a flying start to the game and took the lead when Duncan Hodges released stand-in skipper James Barron to cross for Sam Philip to finish.

Welwyn came back well, though, and scored two goals either side of a short corner from Barron to level things up at 2-2.

From then on, the game belonged to man of the match Barron and he added two further goals to earn the win for his side, despite a Welwyn consolation.

The Berko men’s second XI , meanwhile, can count themselves a little unfortunate as they were held to a 5-5 draw in a gripping encounter with Welwyn.

Welwyn struck first, but Berko rallied to take a 2-1 lead into half-time.

Some excellent finishing from Pete Allam provided him with a hat-trick as Berko surged into a 5-2 lead, but Welwyn fought back to rescue a draw with three late goals.

Elsewhere, there was a surprise result in an inter-club game as the young Berko fifth team saw off the fourth XI 4-0.

Ben Moorhouse helped himself to a hat-trick, and Oliver Johnson rounded off the win with a well-taken goal.

In other action, the Berkhamsted ladies’ first team were beaten 2-1 by West Herts despite playing some very good hockey.

Berko controlled large periods of the game, but a goal from Emma Potts was all they had to show for their efforts.
