Masters of the game

A DUO of hockey players from Dacorum were on top form as they helped England to the Senior Grand Masters title at the 2012 European Hockey Trophy tournament in Italy.

Tring Hockey Club’s Gilbert Grace, and Brian Woolcott, of Gaddesden Row in Hemel, were part of the England team which bagged gold at the event in Bra, ahead of runners-up Holland and third-placed Germany.

Both Gilbert and Brian have featured regularly in the England Masters national squads, and were part of the England team which won gold at the World Cup in South Africa three years ago.

And Brian – the player/manager of the England side – proved he is still on top of his game as he fired home a goal against Holland in the semi-final.

He has continued to impress at the highest level, despite having been told by doctors eight years ago that he may have never run again, as a result of injuries to his knees.

And the Southgate Hockey Club player said he is hopeful of repeating his goalscoring feat when leads the England on home soil at the Masters World Cup later this year.
