Berko sides send out warning signs to league rivals

The Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club men’s first, second and fifth teams all continued their good form this weekend – recording wins against league challengers.

The men’s first XI played extremely well, defeating Rickmansworth 4-1 at a blustery St Clement Danes School.

In spite of the home side replying immediately to a second minute James Barron opener, they did not look like scoring again.

Pete Allam quickly made it two as the Berkhamsted strikers were making life difficult for the Ricky defence, who struggled to find an answer to long balls over the top from Will Steed.

Shortly before half time, Berko made it 3-1 with a goal from Tom Vila, and Barron wrapped the game up with a fourth after the break.

The seconds, meanwhile, recorded a 5-2 victory over Bishop’s Stortford.

Adam Smith, James Edwards, and Alex Hardwicke looked totally in control at the back for Berko, while Paul Whitby (3), Roger Payton and Julian Laxon did the damage up front.

Whitby was named man of the match for his overall contribution to the team.

Elsewhere, the third XI lost 1-0 to Bishop’s Stortford, while the fourths were beaten 3-2 by West Herts, despite goals from Alex Winwright and Tim Buckley.

The fifths provided the performance of the season, however, with an emphatic 5-1 win over close rivals Rickmansworth.

Ben Moorhouse was the star for Berko, hitting a hat-trick in a fine display.
