Hemel Town FC travelled more than 500 miles for their clash National League South fixture at Truro City on Saturday – only to see the game abandoned at half-time due to floodlight failure.

Three floodlights went out just moments before the half-time whistle and, although attempts were made to fix the problem, no immediate solution could be found and referee Ben Cooke was left with no option but to abandon the game.

After the game, Truro chairman Peter Masters apologised for the abandonment which he said were “due to circumstances beyond the club’s control.”

It was the second time in two seasons at Treyew Road that floodlight problems have caused a game to be abandoned.

Last season there was controversy when City’s match against Corby Town was called off with a handful of minutes left with the home team trailing 2-1 to their promotion rivals, who they then beat when the game was replayed.

Hemel had started Saturday’s game well, with goalkeeper Martin Rice producing two good saves to deny Town captain James Potton and then Noor Husin.

But after soaking up the early pressure, City took control as the half progressed, with Dan Green having his low drive saved by Jamie Butler, before the visiting goalkeeper did well to push Ollie Knowles’ effort around the post.

City looked dangerous going forward and, after Pierce Mitchell drove a long range effort over the bar in the 32nd minute, Butler was called upon again to thwart Matt Wright.

But with moments of the half remaining the game’s fate was settled when the floodlights went out.

No new date for the fixture has yet to be announced, but it is expected to take place on a Tuesday evening.
