Tring Athletic were beaten 3-2 by St Margaretsbury in an entertaining Premier Division Cup clash on Tuesday night.
A spectacular strike from St Margaretsbury’s Ricky Light was all that separated the two teams on a night where the result could have gone either way.
St Margaretsbury started brightly, but Tring started to gain possession and were passing the ball well without really threatening the hosts’ goal.
It was St Margaretsbury who eventually broke the deadlock after 32 minutes when a high cross fell to Ed Taylor and he managed to lob the ball backwards and over the keeper to land in the opposite corner of the net.
Tring responded positively, though, and just two minutes later the ball was delivered for striker Vincenzo Iannone to fire home and restore parity.
Then as half-time beckoned, Tring took the lead from the penalty spot after a clumsy challenge in the area.
Skipper Graham Hall stepped up and hit the ball hard and low into the bottom left corner to put his side 2-1 up at the break.
St Margaretsbury started the second half as they had the first, pressing forward and looking dangerous.
And it did not take long for the hosts to level things up as Ryan Wade curled home a free-kick from 30 yards out.
From then on, both teams were looking for the winner, and it was the visitors who produced that little bit of magic needed to win the tie.
With 82 minutes on the clock, the ball was cleared to Light on the right edge of the pitch, and he unleashed a long range thunderbolt to send his side through to the next round.
