Tring Athletic 0-0 Holmer Green
Tring Athletic were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to lowly Holmer Green.
The hosts were targeting a win against their second from bottom opponents, but could not find a way past a resolute defence.
Traditionally, fixtures between the two sides are competitive affairs, however this game was relatively dour with few opportunities.
Admittedly conditions were difficult with a swirling wind but the playing surface was ideal for the passing game.
But most of the play centred around the midfield, with neither side able to break down the opposition defence.
From Athletic’s first corner, in the 22nd minute, defender Chris Salmon just headed past the post, before Graham Hall headed over from another corner 10 minutes later.
With half-time approaching, Holmer Green keeper Charlie Fanner made an instinctive save low down to his right to keep out Hall.
The second half began with more purpose, and Tring striker Reon Thomas saw two shots blocked following some neat football down the left hand side.
Athletic keeper Mike Underwood was then called upon to make his first save of the game in the 49th minute, diving low to his right and turning the ball away for a corner.
Holmer Green started to press, but Athletic responded and a lovely ball by Vinnie Iannone found Sam Mitchell, but his shot was smothered by the keeper.
Athletic made a triple substitution as they looked to force a breakthrough, but Holmer Green’s Andy Shed brought a decent save out of Underwood in the 70th minute following a long throw.
The visitors forced several corners in the last 15 minutes but again Athletic defended well, and Hall saw his effort blocked at the other end.
In the 87th minute Athletic nearly stole all three points as a chance fell to Thomas, but agonisingly for the Athletic players and supporters, the ball drifted the wrong side of the post.
Although both sides were industrious there were few clear chances and a draw was a fair result.
