TRING Athletic suffered a heavy defeat to Royston Town as the visitors showed why they are challenging for the title.

The victory takes Royston back to the top of the table, while Tring remain in fifth place – five points clear of Dacorum rivals Leverstock Green.

It was a bad day at the office for Tring against Royston, and Julian Robinson’s side fell behind to a soft goal inside two minutes – meaning they were always chasing the game.

Athletic found their feet in the match and looked capable of bagging an equaliser, but it was Royston who scored the crucial second goal after 65 minutes.

From then on there was only going to be one winner, and Royston wrapped up the game with a third goal 10 minutes from time to make sure of the three points.

Tring will need to bounce back quickly from the defeat as they welcome high-flying AFC Dunstable to Cow Lane on Saturday.

The visitors are currently on a 13-game winning streak.
