Barwell 2 Hemel Hempstead Town 2
Barwell put an end to Hemel Town’s 100 per cent start to the season as they held the Tudors to a draw in a fiery encounter at Kirkby Road.
League-leaders Hemel took a 2-1 lead into half-time courtesy of efforts from Matty Nolan and Charlie Mpi, but Barwell fought back after the break to take a share of the spoils.
Hemel boss Dean Brennan said: “It was disappointing to lead the game twice and then draw – it felt a bit like a defeat at the end for the boys.
“But I would have taken a draw before the game because they are one of the strongest teams in the division.”
Hemel dominated the first half in terms of possession, and they took the lead in the 10th minute as Nolan fired home from a Peter Holmes short corner.
Barwell levelled twelve minutes later through Jamie Towers’ looping header, but Mpi ensured the Tudors were leading at the break as he headed home one minute later.
The hosts came out strongly after the break, however, and began to create chances.
The game was becoming a bad-tempered affair and Brennan was sent to the stand, before Tudors sub Sakho Bakare was involved in an incident with Barwell’s Jack Edwards that resulted in a mass brawl.
Barwell ensured the points were shared in the 74th minute as Luke Barlone slotted in from six yards.
Despite dropping points for the first time this season, the Tudors are on their best run since March 2009.
They were set to face Arlesey Town at the time the Gazette went to press.
