Northchurch got their Aylesbury League Division 3 campaign off to a winning start with a scrappy 5-3 win away at Wingrave Reserves on Saturday, both sides showing signs of rustiness from the summer break.

Wingrave took a deserved lead through a 20th minute penalty, but two quick goals, one from Tom Garraway and the second from last season’s top scorer Mark Hobley, put Northchurch 2-1 up.

However, the sides went in level at half time, as Wingrave striker Templeton found the top corner of the Northchurch net from an acute angle with a minute to play in the first half.

Northchurch improved drastically in the second half however, as two more goals from Mark Hobley gave him his first hat-trick of the season and Northchurch a 4-2 lead.

With 15 minutes to play, Wingrave pulled a goal back, but straight from the kick off, Northchurch substitute Matt Tucker pounced on a goalkeeping error to make sure Northchurch took all three points.

The next match is away at Long Marston reserves on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.
