LEVY Green have pulled further clear at the summit of the MSSML Premier Division as Stotfold became the latest side to suffer at the hands of the league leaders.

Green’s 1-0 victory was their tenth win from ten league matches, and their incredible start to the season shows no sign of stopping – despite some nervy moments in the second half of the game.

Louis West was the match-winner for high-flying Levy on this occasion as he rose to meet a Lee Bircham corner just as the half-time whistle was set to blow.

It was Stotfold who made the brighter start of the two sides, and Green keeper Carl Tasker was kept on his toes in the early exchanges.

However, it was hosts Levy who went closest to opening the scoring as Jon Davies saw his 20-yard drive cannon back off the post after 28 minutes.

With few further chances for either team, it looked as though the first half would end goalless – but then West struck.

Green skipper Bircham floated his delivery to the far post, and West was on hand to head his side into the lead.

Stotfold came out with more renewed attacking intent after the interval, with Glen Lamacraft, Andy Carter, Tom Peverall and Gareth Cottenden all spurning opportunities to bring their side level in a sustained spell of pressure.

Green, though, weathered the storm well and could have doubled the advantage with 10 minutes remaining as Craig Preston headed into the side netting from another Bircham corner.

There was still time for controversy as, deep into stoppage time, Stotfold felt they should have been awarded a penalty.

Preston’s attempted clearance struck his hand, but despite fierce protestations from the visiting players, the referee waved the appeal away to the relief of the Leverstock faithful

“We are very pleased – it was a very tight game,” said Green boss Steve Heath

“To be honest, we are showing a lack of depth in forward areas so we are needing to be very resolute in defence.

“I can’t complain, though, because we are still winning.”
