Watford Ladies have secured a trip to Wembley after triumphing at the London Regional FA Umbro Fives tournament.
The annual five-a-side competition sees hundreds of teams from around the country battle it out for a place at the National Finals on the hallowed Wembley turf.
After coming through the county stage of the competition earlier this year, the Golden Girls qualified for the London Regional Finals, and were aiming for another victory.
The Hornets successfully negotiated their way through the group stage as runners-up – qualifying for the semi-finals where they really turned on the style.
They defeated a tough Bushey side 3-1, with two goals from Jo Wilson and one from Sarah Wiltshire.
That set up a final clash against Futsal team Itchen Athletic, but their opponents had no answer to Watford’s slick passing and robust defending and the match ended 4-1 with a fine hat-trick from Wiltshire and a penalty added by Cally Rowell.
Watford manager Steve Edwards was understandably happy with the outcome and was full of praise for his young squad.
“I’m really pleased how we grew into our football over the course of the day and we definitely saved our A-game for the semi-final and final,” he said.
“I’m so pleased these players will get the opportunity to play on the Wembley stage.
“Opportunities like that don’t come around every day, but they deserve it and we’ll make sure we enjoy every minute of it.”
