Cranfield United 1 Berkhamsted 2
Berko came from behind on Saturday with a second half comeback to clinch a place in the first round proper of the FA Carlsberg Vase.
The game started quietly with neither keeper having much to deal with in the opening quarter of an hour. It then opened up and Carl Tasker just held on to a shot from Sam Evans. Connor Calcutt shot over the bar at the other end after Josh Chamberlain flicked the ball on.
Lawrence Bunker was next to shoot over after Calcutt created the chance. Then Calcutt shot just past the post after again combining well with Chamberlain. Jordon Frederick also went close as Berko were rampant.
However, Tasker had to put another Evans shot over the bar and got off lightly after fumbling a corner that was needlessly conceded when nobody told Lewis Rodrigoe he had time to clear.
Dan Green produced the save of the day to keep out a well placed Bunker header by the far post. Against the run of play, Berko went behind when skipper Dale Sears conceded a penalty kick as he pushed a forward over. Manny Richardson sent Tasker the wrong way to put the Division 1 side ahead at the interval.
Berko equalised in the 58th minute. A Chamberlain corner was met at the back post by Sears who headed across the six-yard line to Bunker at the other post and he nodded it down and Frank Jowle was first to the ball to stab a goal from close range.
At the airport end, Richardson’s free kick hit the defensive wall and Tasker’s chest came to the rescue from Richardson’s follow up shot.
There were bookings in each half for Danny Power and Sears as well as Luke Williamson for a foul on Chamberlain. Green saved from Chamberlain after a Jowle corner as the pressure mounted.
Mick Vipond’s decision to introduce Lewis Pritchard proved decisive. He was first to the ball in the air, beating former Berko skipper Simon Carmichael and releasing Calcutt whose first shot was kept out, but he lobbed home the winner from the rebound.
Berko will play Hadley in the next round.
