Holmer Green 0-2 Berkhamsted (Match abandoned)

BERKHAMSTED were denied three points as their match at Holmer Green was abandoned after a serious injury to the hosts’ captain.

With Berko leading 2-0 with 12 minutes left to play, Green captain Gary Finch was injured in a collision with a Berko player, and the skipper had to be airlifted to The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

It was a sad end to a game in which Berko had played some good football on a difficult pitch.

Teenager Connor Calcutt had given the visitors the lead with a header from a Matt Wardle cross – his third goal in four games since signing from Hemel Hempstead Town.

Berko’s second goal came from another substitute, Courtney Francis, who scored with a half-volley on the turn into the bottom corner of the net.

The dramatic end to the match need not have happened if play had stopped promptly for an offside flag against Berko.

Josh Smith was in the penalty area when he was brought down, and he and Green skipper Finch collided and went into the post.

With the Green man also catching his studs in the turf, the result was an horrific accidental leg break that ended the game, although the emergency services were on the scene promptly.

Subject to confirmation from the league management committee, the game will be played again on Tuesday, April 10.
