Calcutt earns Comrades draw
Welwyn Garden City 1 Berkhamsted 1
Connor Calcutt bagged a second half equaliser to ensure Berkhamsted salvaged a draw in their final pre-season friendly of the year.
The Comrades had started the game brightly, with Aaron Usmani’s early goal ruled out for offside.
Usmani came close again as he was denied by a good save, but it was Welwyn who took the lead shortly before half-time.
Berko manager Mick Vipond introduced Lewis Pritchard from the bench at the interval, and he made an immediate impact.
The momentum was beginning to swing in the Comrades’ favour, and they deservedly levelled the scores as Pritchard fed Calcutt to make it 1-1.
Both sides continued to create chances as the second half progressed, with Welwyn denied by the offside flag before Calcutt rattled the crossbar.
The Comrades’ attention now turns to their season opener in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Berko travel to Hoddesdon Town, and Vipond expects to have Lawrence Bunker and Max Farrelly available to add to the squad that drew at Welwyn.
If a replay is needed it will be on Tuesday at Broadwater, otherwise the Comrades will be at home to Hillingdon Borough in their first Premier Division game of the season, kick-off 7.45pm.
