Watford Ladies FC suffered a crushing 8-2 defeat in their opening home match of the season to reigning National Premier League Champions Sunderland.
The Hornets started brightly and opened the scoring after 25 minutes – Kate Owen slotting the ball into an empty net for the home side.
The Black Cats from Sunderland were quick to get back on terms, though, with Natalie Gutteridge levelling the contest just two minutes later.
Watford went ahead again ten minutes before the half, Lois Roche unleashing a 35-yard effort into the top corner.
But in a crazy three minute spell, Watford were again pegged back and then allowed Sunderland to take a lead into half-time.
In an open match, the away side took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half and put the game beyond reach with two further goals in two minutes.
With the game all but over, Sunderland added another three goals to make the final tally eight and leave Watford shell-shocked after a defeat they would sooner forget.
The Hornets will look to bounce back quickly as they head to the midlands to face Aston Villa in their next fixture.
