Berkhamsted 2 Hoddesdon Town 1
Berkhamsted overcame stubborn resistance from Division One side Hoddesdon Town in Tuesday night’s FA Cup first preliminary round replay at Broadwater.
Both managers shuffled their sides from the original tie on Saturday, and Berko’s Craig Preston came in for Josh Chamberlain, while recent signing Segun Femiola made his debut at centre-back.
The match had a goalless feel to it in the first half but the drama came near the interval.
Frankie Jowle came to Berko’s rescue by clearing a goal-bound shot off the line, before the Comrades raced up the other end and scored thanks to a spectacular 30-yard shot from Connor Calcutt.
After the interval, Berko keeper Carl Tasker saved well from Ryan Redford as Hoddesdon battled for an equaliser.
The leveller eventually came on the hour mark, with a speculative bending lob from wide on the left by Ben Andreos catching Tasker out.
Calcutt could have put Berko back in front when he lobbed over with just the keeper to beat, before Tasker made the save of the night to deny Hoddesdon substitute Pete Sawyer.
And the decisive moment arrived with 10 minutes of normal time left – full-back Jamie Gavin gambled and came forward to head home the winner from a Calcutt cross, after Steve Ashby had advanced and won the ball at the side of the area.
Berko will now host Premier Division side Hadley in the next round of the competition on Saturday, August 25.
