Tring Athletic suffered a derby day defeat as a hat-trick from Stacey Field kept high flying Aylesbury United’s title hopes on track.

While United looked sharper and fully deserved their victory, Athletic felt that refereeing mistakes were to blame for three of the goals.

In contrast to the final outcome, Athletic started brightly and came close to opening the scoring through a powerful header from skipper Graham Hall that was well saved.

After weathering the early storm, however, United came into the game and two goals in the space of 90 seconds – from Field and Ben Baines – swung the momentum firmly in their favour.

Field headed home a cross from close range, before Baines appeared to foul Sam Joliffe from behind in the build-up to his goal.

Groggy from these early blows, Athletic were struck with the knock-out punch 12 minutes before half time when Field slotted home from a seemingly-offside position to make it 3-0.

After that the game was effectively over as a contest and Field made sure of the result three minutes into the second half when he completed his hat-trick from what looked like another offside position.
