Boxmoor start season with narrow defeat

THE Boxmoor Sunday first XI got off to a disappointing start to the season as they suffered a 13-run loss to Gerrards Cross.

On a cold and overcast day, the pitch was just about playable, and new Boxmoor Sunday captain Luke Hinton lost the toss and was put into field.

The erratic Andy Price struggled to find line and length in his first spell, but Ravi Giriyappa and Dan Furkins tied the Gerrards Cross batsman down – taking three wickets between them.

Spin was then introduced, with Aaron Hinton getting some nice turn on the wicket which had been covered before the game.

Persistent bowling brought his first wicket, before a stunning delivery around the back of the legs of the number six batsman gave him his second.

Stan Williamson then got a wicket with his first ball, while Keith Mannering got hit for six with his.

Price returned at the end, and despite two drops in consecutive balls from Aaron Hinton, he held a third attempt in the next over.

Boxmoor came out chasing a good score on a low-scoring pitch and gave it a valiant effort, despite Luke Hinton being dropped first ball before getting caught with a fantastic one-handed catch on 11.

Matt Chapman played the best innings of the match with 72, with Ryan Smart chipping in with 38.

However it wasn’t enough as Boxmoor fell just short in the allotted overs.
