Paddlers get a grant

editorial image

CHILTERN Canoe Club have been awarded a Sport England grant which will enable them to grow the club and offer more for local paddlers.

The club had an excellent inaugural year, winning Best Newcomers Club at the Herts Sports Partnership Sports Awards, but currently cater mainly for children – with adults having to provide their own boats.

Therefore, part of the grant will be used to buy adult-sized kayaks and kit so the club can start beginners’ classes for adults, which are due to start in September.

The grant will also enable the club to invest in a box trailer that will allow them to take members out and about to a variety of paddling locations.

Upcoming trips include taking a group to a local slalom competition, fortnightly paddle and a pint trips on the canal, monthly river paddles, and a trip to the coast to try out some sea kayaking.

The club have a good contingent of volunteer helpers – with most of them wanting to progress to become BCU trained coaches – and the final aspect of the grant is to fund the coaching of these individuals.

Anyone interested in joining the Chiltern Canoe Club as it heads into its second year should contact Cathy Court at chilterncanoeclub@gmail.com.
