Yobs who broke into a playgroup and stole children’s toys have been branded ‘heartless’ by police.

The burglary at Margaret Lloyd Playgroup in Grovehil,l, Hemel Hempstead, happened between 8pm on Friday, November 14 and and 8.30am the following Tuesday.

Toy toolkits and a selection of other playthings were nabbed in the callous attack, along with a brand new bench.

The items formed part of the playgroup’s multi-thousand pound improvement of its outside play area, where a ‘street’ has been created using coloured Wendy houses.

The group’s deputy play manager Jackie Thomas said this is not the first time the 30-year-old playgroup has been targeted by thieves and vandals. In the past, the group – which currently looks after 48 children – has had its windows smashed andother items swiped.

Jackei said: “It’s the lowest of the low – you just wonder why anyone would do that.

“They’re not overly expensive toys, but they are things the children enjoy playing with, and it adds up to keep replacing them.

“It really annoys me because we are trying our hardest to make as nice an environment as possible for the children. The worst part is the people that did this could have come through the group at some stage.”

A Herts Police spokesman said: “This is a particularly heartless crime as the items stolen were toys that the playgroup use regularly, therefore the offender(s) have deprived the group’s children of their enjoyment of these.

“We would urge anyone with any information in relation to this burglary to come forward. We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual or suspicious between Friday afternoon and Tuesday morning. Any information, however seemingly insignificant, may prove very helpful to our investigation.”
