Will tier shift for Berkhamsted schools get the go-ahead?
Education bosses are about to decide whether Berkhamsted’s schooling system should be switched from three to two-tier.
The decision is due to be made at a meeting of Herts County Council’s cabinet panel on Monday, September 24.
The proposal was driven by headteachers, who say it will help solve the area’s shortage of school places and free up government funding for Ashlyns School.
The proposal would allow children to be taught at the Chesham Road school from 11 instead of 13, freeing up space in oversubscribed schools for children aged under 11.
Government funding for education is structured towards two-tier education, so the change could also bring more money into the town’s schools.
Under the change extra classrooms would be built at St Mary’s First School in Northchurch and Potten End First School for two extra year groups.
