THREE schools have been celebrating after being given hundreds of pounds each by Waitrose as part of its Community Matters scheme.

Each month, every branch of the supermarket chain is given £1,000 to distribute between three good causes based nearby.

Each shopper is then given a green token to drop into the box of the cause they most want to back. The cash is then distributed proportionately, based on number of votes.

January’s nominees were Goldfield Infants and Nursery School in Tring which got £373, Great Gaddesden Primary School (£302), and Little Gaddesden CofE Primary School (£325).

Each wanted money to spend on outdoor play areas for children.

The teacher who applied for Great Gaddesden to be part of the scheme had since left the school.

School receptionist Beverley Woodage said: “We were not even aware the application had been put in. It was all a bit out of the blue – but we’re so glad we got the cash.”

Little Gaddesden headteacher Charis Geoghegan said: “We have worked hard to create a lovely environment for children at playtime. Now we can finish this project.”
