Senior war veterans came together in an early celebration of national Armed Forces day with a special afternoon of lunch and entertainment.

Almost 90 former servicemen and women attended the free event run by the Abbots Langley branch of the Royal British Legion.

Vice-chairman Keith Peutherer said: “It went down very well. Everyone was very appreciative and all said how much they enjoyed it. This year our entertainment culminated in a sing-along of music from the time of the First World War.

“This is a costly venture but knowing how much our guests enjoy the occasion renews our determination to maintain this tradition.”

The official Armed Forces Day, a UK-wide initiative to raise awareness of the contributions made by those in and connected with the armed forces, is today. A flag marking the occasion has been displayed outside Dacorum Borough Council’s civic centre throughout the week.
